Who was
Lorena Borjas?
Lorena Borjas (1960–2020) was a renowned Mexican transgender activist based in New York. She is remembered as “the mother of the trans Latinx movement” in Queens for her tireless advocacy on behalf of trans people, immigrants, and sex workers.
Throughout her life, Lorena opened her home to provide shelter, legal support, health care, and solidarity for those most in need. She founded and worked with multiple community organizations focused on HIV prevention, fighting human trafficking, and advancing trans rights.
Lorena was not only an important figure in our community—she was also part of the Latinx Institute. Her passing left an empty space at the heart of the UNIÓN = FUERZA Latinx Institute, a reminder of her invaluable contributions and the love she inspired.
